Testing Core Integrity in Disposable Hygiene Products
Today, there are multiple methods used to measure core integrity in baby diapers, feminine pads, and adult incontinence products. Tests range from using simple tools to employing complex equipment.
In all methodologies used, core integrity tests exert force directly on a wet core for a specified length of time. This is done through spinning, shaking, or swinging. These tests may provide some measure of quantitative data for core cracking. However, they do not reflect the realities of abuse that a core endures before an insult.
Bostik takes a more holistic approach to core integrity testing. We add an extra step to our method to create the Conditioned Core Cracking Test. Our method includes a preconditioned component to manual and machine testing to further evaluate core integrity when a diaper is both wet and dry.
The process involves:
- Defining an insult point on a dry diaper.
- Preconditioning the diaper through simulating the movements of a wearer while the diaper is still dry.*
- Wetting the defined insult point with saline solution.
- Repeating the movement simulation until a core crack appears. A “crack” is a separation in the core. At some point during the second round of drops, the core will separate due to gravity and the weight of the wet fluff, SAP and liquid.
A core crack at any stage of use can result in poor core absorption and ultimately leakage. Robust core integrity testing helps disposable hygiene manufacturers understand how well their core design can withstand the stress of product use.
